Beyond the Canyon's Cliff
[ ]Warlords of the Highlands

Our Step is tried and true - Thunder in the Highlands...
Our Might is without rival - Thunder down the Canyon...
Our Will is resolute - Thunder in the Lowlands...
Our Spirit will not falter - Thunder from the Heavens...

Ah - you have made the climb, have you? You must have quite a pair of sure-footed hooves on those feet of yours; because only the most hardy of hoofed creatures are found here. These are the Canyonlands; a maze system of canyons and plateaus - the Highlands. These lands belong to the Warlords of the Highlands: a tightly-knit (and thuroughly divided) system of clans, each made up of various hoofed creatures. Each clan is unique, and built for the function of war against the others. This is no place for a foreigner - this is a civil war zone. Trespassers are treated as enemies.

[ ]The Outcasts

They shunned and beat us - Now we are our own...
They tortured and mocked us - Now we are invisible...
They told us to run - And we did; for a time...
They told us, "Go to Hell" - And now we shall repay them.

There are never only two sides to any conflict. Nothing is as simple as light and dark, black and white; and these creatures prove it. Here, in hiding deep within the Canyon's furthest mazelike reaches, are the Outcasts. Who are they? They are the hybrids - the accursed sons and daugthers of captured females; force-bred with their enemies out of mere spite, and shunned by all because of their often hideous appearance. Apparently, the solid-hoofed beasts of the Highlands were not meant to breed with the cloven hoofed creatures of the Lowlands. The Outcasts are few, but they are powerful animals endowed with the strength of both their parents; and then some (not to mention a generally ungainly appearance). They hold a great deal of spite for both the Highlanders and the Lowlanders - for both creating and banishing them at birth. They are not a herd to mess with - but if you're a misfit; they will accept you with open arms.

[ ]The Firey Plateau

Beware the ash, the soot, the flame -
This is one war you cannot tame...

Immagine a massive cylinder with sheer rock faces that drop hundreds of feet down into the Canyon. Not so bad, right? Now add a continually erupting volcano and two warring clans to the scene. Not entirely so wholesome anymore, is it? Didn't think so.

This is perhaps the most fought-over piece of rock in all of the Canyon lands. Why, exactly, either the Highlanders or the Lowlanders would want such a dangerous plateau to be added to their territory is not clear. What is clear, however, is the horrid stench of the burning bodies of the fallen, who just so happened to fall - wounded or dead - in a very inopportune place...

Beyond the Outer Rim
[ ]Clan of the Endless Deep

Hear the Death-Call Raven - Hear Him call your name...
Hear the Wind howl mourning - Life and Death are the same...
Hear the Bells toll in finality - Your name they do defame...
Hear the silence of the Abyss - And forget from whence you came...

This, journeyman, is the Abyss. A massive scar in the planet's crust - the deep Pit rippling outwards towards the mountians. Some say this place is a giant crater, but others say it is far too large and too deep for its creator to be a simple meteor. It is here that the Clan of the Deep calls home; a ravenous pack of demonic wolves. Their territory is well-marked: just don't step over the deep ridge of the crater - don't decend into the bowl, and you can keep your head. Their rule is strict and final - they do not take trespassers lightly. It is said that the Deep Clan wolves are guardians of the Pit and the Underworld; a place reached only by traveling to the very heart of the Pit, and navigating a twisting tunnel of pitch black. The Deep Clan wolves guard this land of strange vegitation and creatures with their lives; it is their calling.

[ ]The Black River

No, your eyes play no tricks.
Yes, oh naive soul, the rushing water is black as pitch...

This is a river like no other; a river that runs not crimson, not neon green; but Black - the Black River. It's true source lies deep in the Underworld, and it flows from the Black Tunnel, crosses and climbs the steep sides of the Crater, and pours out into the Mountians controlled by the hoofed warlords of the Cliffs. But here, where this strange, gravity-defying river is under the control of the Deep Clan, the Black River is at its strangest. Many difficult to reach caves lie beneath its swift-moving surface - sanctuaries of silence and safety; if you survive the upstream route you must take to get there. Not to mention the five-minute swim against a jetstream tunnel to reach the underwater system of caverns beneath it.

Above the uncannily black waves, strange plants - plants strange even for the Crater - grow in great abundnace. Unworldly glowing fungi cast eerie light on the folding water, and seemingly dead oak-like trees bend and creak in the wind rushing over the River. Come here at your own risk; no one really knows what lives here - on the banks of the Legion's River.

[ ]The Inner Circle

You cannot find us among the living - But neither among the dead...
You will not find us frolicing with the Others - We've no use for folly...
But you will find us Here - Where the Jaws gape wide...
Here, we belong - In the Inner Circle we reside...

When you've outstayed your welcome; when Time, Life, and Death have poked their claws into your Soul; this is where you will be found. The few wolves that "live" here permanently are very strange indeed; beings caught in a strange riddle of Life and Death. It is their duty, as the strange Souls they are, to be the last line of defense for the Tunnel against outsiders - and the first for all of Em'barr against the Spirits Below.

Beyond the Tunnel of Darkness
[ ]Beasts of the Underworld

You've entered our world - Beware the Legion...
You've trespassed our bounds - Beware the Legion...
You've broken the treaty - Beware the Legion...
And now you are ours - You belong to the Legion...

You are either an unnaturally brave or unnaturally foolish soul to have ventured this far! How you passed unnoticed - or barely alive - through the ranks of the Clan of the Deep to the center of their crater is beyond me; but why exactly you have strived this far, to come here - well, that is beyond anyone. Why anyone would want to force their way over the Rim and across the Pit to the gateway to Hell itself is a perfect mystery; unless, of course, your "life" began here. This is the Underworld; the holding place for every evil spirit. They are genderless, insane beings with little purpose other than destruction and chaos. They are trapped here, in this undefined world: locked away from the terrestrial globe, forbidden to torment the living - for now. The "its" that exist here have developed their own ruling order - but structure and order never last long amongst a troupe of genderless, lifeless spirits of infinite power.

Some call them "spirits," others call them "gods." But whatever these genderless beasts really are, whatever happens "down here" seems to always effect what happens "out there." Peek down their tunnels if you dare - but don't fall in; you'll never come back the same...

[ ]The Obsidian Fall

Once we rose from those Obsidian depths...
Now, they are less than a memory...

After all you have learned about the strange Black River, it shouldn't be of any surprise to you to find that it's source is deep underground in a place known as the Underworld; and that not only does the strangely black water rise from the earth, but it defies all reason and falls upward instead of downward. They call this place the Obsidian Fall; the lowest reachable - and visible - portion of the source of the Black River, which, other than the Fall, has no other name. The black water shoots up vertically for untold thousands - perhaps millions - of feet before crowning out and snaking its way up the Tunnel to the surface of the Crater. Not a drop of the black water falls back towards the ground. The many rocky ledges looking out over the Fall are unstable and steep, and the system of caverns connecting them is no less treacherous. But the trip and danger is worth it, if you like such things as black waterfalls that fall towards the skies...
